TESTING SPECIFICATIONS FOR 2014 GEDAbout the TestGED is an acronym for General Educational Development. It is often confused with the general education degree. This acronym does not mean general education diploma either. This test is developed to measure proficiency of individuals in science, mathematics, social sciences, reading and writing. If an individual passes the GED test, they can earn their high school credential equivalent to the completion of high school. Many students who are not able to meet their diploma requirements for their high schools normally take the GED test to get the necessary qualifications that are equivalent to an individual who actually graduated high school. GED exams are developed by Peason under the joint venture they have with the Amec "The current test series is the 2002 Series GED® Test—the fourth test series developed by GED Testing Service. A high school diploma remains the primary ticket to many entry-level jobs, and is also a prerequisite for promotions, occupational training, and postsecondary education. In an ideal society, everyone would graduate from high school. Although that is not a reality today, GED Testing Service offers the only nationally recognized opportunity to earn a high school-equivalency credential.
The 2002 Series GED® Test is delivered in two formats: paper and computer.

- This test is a nationally recognized exam that has been in use for the past 70 years.
- Only test aligned with current high school standards (including grade 12 standards) andcareer- and college-readiness expectations
- Delivered exclusively on computer which provides a consistent testing experience nationwide and improved passing rates
- Same-day scoring on all four parts including the new score report for reporting and remediation
- Offers two score levels:
- GED® Passing Score: at or higher than the minimum needed to demonstrate high school equivalency-level skills and abilities
- GED® Passing Score with Honors: at or higher than the minimum needed to demonstrate career- and college-readiness (CCR)
- Four content areas:
- Reasoning Through Language Arts (RLA) (150 minutes)
- Section 1 (35 minutes*)
- Section 2 (45 minutes)
- Student Break (10 minutes)
- Section 3 (60 minutes*)
*The time allotted for sections 1 and 3 may vary slightly, but the total test time will always be 150 minutes. - Mathematical Reasoning (115 minutes)
- Part 1 - (first 5 test questions) calculator not allowed
- Part 2 - (remaining 41 test questions) calculator allowed - As of Friday, February 21, 2014, the standard time allowance on the GED® test - Mathematical Reasoning was increased by 25 minutes.
- The time allowance for GED Ready™ - Mathematical Reasoning was also increased by 13 minutes.

- Students can test three times on the same subject without waiting. After the third attempt, there is a 60-day waiting period before trying again.
